Auto Crash Tested                     

with IST Data Recorder

On Jay Leno Show

IST’s EDR-3C crash sensor technology got a nationwide audience on the Jay Leno show to demonstrate how auto crash data is recorded. On Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2002, Rusty Haight an  Instrumented Sensor Technology (IST) customer and accident re-constructionist expert appeared on the “Tonight Show” with Jay Leno. Live, during the show, Rusty proceeded to drive and crash a Caprice, accelerating to 44.7 mph in 25 seconds into the side of a Honda.  Both the Caprice and the Honda were equipped with IST EDR-3C tri-axial acceleration data recorders. Results from the data analysis for the Caprice revealed peak G’s of 15 and a delta-V of about 16 mph. The Honda measured a 27 mph delta-V.  Rusty was protected by a special safety helmet, leg guards and the auto air bags. Terry Bradshaw also appeared on the show with Rusty. Yes, Rusty said, “I was wearing my seatbelt and I did get a little hickey from the air bag on my chin and lower lip. Remember, I had just 25 seconds to get 650 ft. to the impact point. Leno was really funny and easy to talk to and both Bradshaw and Leno were very interested and asked a lot of questions.
